Under the advice of his physician, Ashtanga Yoga founder and guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois just announced that he will not be present at the grand opening celebration of his new yoga studio in Islamorada, Florida. An opening party on March 14, followed by a 2-week workshop led by Jois, his daughter Saraswati, and his grandson Sharath, were originally scheduled over 5 months ago. It would seem that nearly all students planning on attending would have made travel arrangements and housing accommodations by now.
This is the second year in a row that Jois has cancelled his eagerly-anticipated presence at this Islamorada workshop due to health issues. Last year his workshop was called off completely, but this year Saraswati and Sharath will actually travel to Islamorada and lead the workshop together, despite Jois’ absence.
A note on the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute website reads:
“My Beloved Students,
I have just been informed by my physician that it is recommended that I not travel at this time. While I am extremely disappointed that I won’t see each and every one of you, I hope that you will support my new center by joining my daughter Saraswathi and my grandson Sharath for the grand opening party of March 14th followed by classes.
This will be my family’s only visit to the United States in 2008. I look forward to your support.
Love,
Guruji”
***Update 3/9/08: The workshop in Islamorada has unfortunately been cancelled entirely.

The entire workshop is actually cancelled.
I would like to attend the workshop
I’ve always to attend one of his classes. I’ve been watching some of his videos on youtube and it’s amazing the precision of the practioniters. Namaste. John b. http://www.theashramyoga.com
Yes, the disciplined nature of the Ashtanga system does seem to breed some pretty precise practices. Maybe you’ll have the chance to practice with Jois someday – perhaps the next time he comes to Islamadora? Your studio in Washington looks beautiful, BTW!
