Thanks for your feedback Katie, David, & Brian! In thinking further about this issue, we've realized that a well-rounded yoga practice which touches on all muscle areas of the body should result in a balanced and healthy spine. It's when people overemphasize their abs - as often happens with people who "exercise" or "workout" at the gym on a regular basis - that the muscles which support the spine can be thrown out of alignment. The point that this article makes about the true nature of the core is important for all yogis - Ashtangis and otherwise - to keep in mind, however. We need to make sure that our practices include poses which strengthen the whole core and not just the deep abdomen muscles that uddiyana bandha works.

But we love uddiyana bandha and won't be giving it up anytime soon! :)

I actually agree that over emphasis on abdominal muscles can through off the skeletal alignment. I have seen it MANY times in people who do not balance out their practice with back strengthening (ie. backbending.)Many teachers in my area put alot of emphasis on forward bending and pulling in abs that the back is really ignored. By adding a good back bending routine to balance out the abdomen training will generally fix the issue.

I think people forgot that "Core Muscles" does not just mean the abs. The encompass all the muscle from tail bone to neck that erect the spine.

Bandhas done correctly & holistically are definitely good in all respects. Bandhas done poorly have uncertain results. For most, it is not a black and white technique, but one that gets stronger, deeper and more balanced over the years of consistent practice.
