Hello, Hello! What a crazy week it’s been. On Tuesday we found out that Ashtanga Yoga founder and hugely important figure in the yoga world Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who has been ill as of late, was admitted to the ICU. His grandson Sharath Rangaswamy subsequently cancelled his U.S. teaching tour and rushed home to Mysore to be with his family. And then on Wednesday, a fire started in the Santa Barbara foothills and quickly grew into a full-fledged international headline-generating emergency.
There are a few more pieces to throw into the Crazy Town mix. On Friday morning a magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook Ojai, a town located about 45 minutes from Santa Barbara. (No people or structures were harmed, but STILL. Kinda crazy.) On Friday afternoon several police cars showed up across the street from Drishti and blocked off Santa Barbara Street between Canon Perdido and Carrillo Streets. All passersby were completely baffled by the sudden street closure and the flashing police lights. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that through digging in the dirt, a construction project had unearthed a buried World War II hand grenade. This was considered a potentially “explosive device”, and the street was therefore shut down by the authorities until the situation was settled.
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois update: Despite that fact that Pattabhi Jois was admitted to the ICU a full five days ago, there has unfortunately been no official update from the family in Mysore regarding the status of the situation. However, we did hear from a friend in the know that Jois was doing “slightly better”. We’re sorry to say that this is all of the news we have to report right now on this amazingly important topic to the yoga world. :(
Santa Barbara Jesusita Fire Update: As of Saturday morning, the intensity of the fire had settled significantly. Today the fire is at 55% containment, mandatory evacuation areas have been greatly reduced, and the total amount of homes lost is about 47 (it had earlier been estimated at about 80.) We are eternally grateful to the hard-working, brave firefighters who prevented this fire from becoming a complete disaster for our community. Thank you!!
