Big Sur is an absolute must-do for any Californian or would-be Californian. Just a short 3-hour jaunt up the road from Santa Barbara, it features gorgeous secluded beaches, national forests filled with beautiful hiking, and jaw-dropping cliffside views.
The major expense of planning a trip to Big Sur is just getting there. The famed Highway 1 slowly winds its way up to this remote and pristine piece of wilderness. Don't forget to gas up in Morro Bay, or you'll be stuck paying nearly $5 a gallon!
Once there, you can find relatively inexpensive spots to camp (Andrew Molera is a forever favorite). If you're looking to save even more money, bring your own rations. Otherwise, Big Sur Bakery is a rustic gem. It's well worth it to stop in and grab a home baked muffin and enjoy their sun-soaked patio.
In Big Sur, it's all about taking in the transformational and expansive quality of the great outdoors. You'll be rewarded for your efforts with peace and quiet, friendly folks, and as much natural beauty as the eye can see.
Where will YOUR weekend take you? :)
