Our friend Katie attended the much-anticipated Seane Corn workshop at SBYC this past weekend (we mentioned this exciting-sounding workshop to you in a previous post.) Here is Katie’s report from Day #1 of the two-day workshop. (Day #2 write-up soon to follow!)
Detoxing with Seane Corn
I love it when wonderful things just fall in my lap, like the fact that Seane Corn came to Santa Barbara to lead a detox and vinyasa workshop just a few days after my friend Ashley and I decided we were going to do a liver cleanse. And the workshop with Seane was wonderful – intense but wonderful.
Seane Corn is an amazing woman and an amazing yoga teacher. While leading us in a specialized sequence for detoxification full of compressions, decompressions and twists, Seane spoke to us about the many toxins that we battle on a day to day basis. It really is amazing what our body and especially our liver does to keep us healthy. Let’s see, there’s pollution in the air, pollution in our water, electromagnetic toxins, toxins in our skin products, toxins in our cleaning products, processed foods, chemicals in food packaging, excess sugar, alcohol, drugs….the list goes on and on. I couldn’t help but gaze towards my liver while in downward facing dog with feelings of guilt for all I put the little guy through.
Seane didn’t stop there though, while ringing out our internal organs in our poses, we were also given the task to contemplate our needs for an emotional detox. The area we were focusing on was our third chakra, the place where our sense of self is located, our ego. And who doesn’t need a little clean up in that area every now and then?! Often it’s our reaction to stress and negative emotions that lead us to other bad habits like over eating, eating the wrong types of food or turning to drugs or alcohol.
Our emotional bodies can be harder to cleanse than our physical ones but being aware of our thoughts and habits is a great place to start. I learned a lot from Seane Corn in her detox class, I got a great kick start to my liver cleanse, a new outlook on my emotional health, and a few sore muscles in the process. For those of you that missed the workshop, Seane recorded the exact sequence that she taught us for Sounds True and so keep an eye out for the DVD soon.
