Santa Barbara Yoga Buzz

Friday, 29 August, 2008

Holy Toledo, things are changing in our local Santa Barbara yoga scene. Where do we begin?  For starters, Yoga Soup is going crazy.  Not mentally or spiritually crazy, mind you, but crazy in terms of change, change, change.  Major construction has been taking place in the main lobby of the studio for weeks now.  Yoga Soup’s newly-added second studio is now in full function and there seem to be classes held inside all day long.  Nicole Inglish, owner of  Source Yoga Studio, a smallish, sweet spot here in SB, is now teaching one class a week at Yoga Soup on Monday mornings.  And as we mentioned in our last Yoga Buzz update, senior teacher Heather Tiddens recently started teaching two classes at Yoga Soup in addition to the classes she holds at Santa Barbara Yoga Center.  Well, a couple of weeks ago, Heather began teaching two additional classes at Yoga Soup – an ongoing Introduction to Yoga class on Monday evenings and a Yin Yoga & Meditation class on Wednesday evenings.  That makes four classes that Ms. Tiddens now leads in her new venue, and four that she continues to hold back at SBYC as well.  We’re sure that Heather’s well-versed, senior instruction will be an excellent complement to Yoga Soup’s other offerings.

To see a list of even more new classes offered at Yoga Soup (including Tai Chi and a Meditation class), check out our newly-updated bulletin of classes and workshops in Santa Barbara.

Although new teachers are being drawn to Yoga Soup like a paper clip to a magnet (do you like our creative simile?), there are some other important Yoga Soup faces who are moving on from the spaceArturo Peal, highly-respected yoga/anatomy teacher and acupuncturist, has decided to re-locate his classes away from Yoga Soup, where he has taught since the studio opened in February of 2006.  Today was his last official day on the schedule at Yoga Soup.  He’s decided to hold his new classes in the cool space Aikido of Santa Barbara on Milpas St. – we’ll have more details to report to you about this soon.

Yoga Soup’s longtime manager and core staff teacher Karen Gabai is also done with her time at this studio.  Her last class will be held this Sunday, August 31, at 10:30am.  She’s currently looking for another space in which to hold her classes – we’ll report more details when we have them.

As of October 15, Ashtanga teachers Steve Dwelley and Michele Nichols will no longer be teaching in their little haven of a space, the Ashtanga Yoga Shala.  The building in which the AYS resides is slated to be torn down and re-built as a high-end condo complex at some point in the future, and Steve and Michele are ready to instigate change and move on while they’re ahead.  They are currently entertaining offers from both Yoga Soup and Santa Barbara Yoga Center, but where they’ll end up is still a big unknown.  When the news is announced, we’ll be sure to let you know here, on the all-important Drishti Blog!

As always, if you have any Santa Barbara Yoga Buzz that you think we should know about, feel free to email us and let us know!
