Hey Everybody! It’s time for that favorite column of yours, Santa Barbara Yoga Buzz. Read on to see what we have to report to you from the SB yoga world today!
1) As we mentioned in our last newsletter, we were about to debut our brand new SB yoga instructor interview series called Inside the Yoga Studio. Well, the debut took place a couple of weeks ago and we are more than happy about it! The engaging yoga teacher Cynthia Abulafia, who can be found at both Yoga Soup and Santa Barbara Yoga Center, was our first interview subject and her insightful answers to our unique questions can be found here. Check it out!
2) We’ve been hinting for awhile that Real Bodywork, our favorite yoga and massage DVD producer, was about to release a new yoga DVD starring our lovely local teacher Emily Kligerman. And guess what – it happened! Emily’s Yoga Therapy for Back Pain DVD recently hit the shelves at Drishti and it’s already receiving lots of attention. Everyone in the entire world knows what back pain feels like, and this well-designed, high-quality DVD features specific practices for each different type of back pain, as well as general exercises for overall back health maintenance. Oh yeah, and to top it all off, Emily’s fellow student featured in the DVD is SB’s very own Arturo Peal, who is a much-loved and respected yoga therapist in town. So check it out and pass it on, guys! You won’t want to miss this wonderfully helpful DVD.
3) Amazingly awesome yoga teacher Heather Tiddens has a newly re-designed website! Designed by local yoga students (and longtime students of Heather’s) Gina Fiedel and Doug Anderson of Fat Eyes web design, the new site went live a couple of weeks ago and we are loving it. It’s full of fun new pictures of Heather gracefully demonstrating asanas, as well as all of the info you’d need in order to practice with her (ongoing classes, workshops, retreats, teacher trainings, etc.) Heather is one of the jewels of our local yoga community, and we seriously recommend that you check out her classes if you haven’t already.
In other Heather Tiddens news, there’s a terrific intensive retreat in Montana this summer called Yoga & Ceremony that’s led by both Heather and Cheri Clampett (whose soothing, therapeutic classes perfectly complement Heather’s stronger, more active style). This Montana retreat is an annual event, and every student we’ve heard from who’s ever come out of this retreat has absolutely raved about it. There are still a few coveted spots available for this special event, so check out the flyer if you might be interested!
Our last piece of Heather Tiddens news (did we have a lot to say about Heather today or what?) is that she was prominently featured in the cool surf documentary that premiered in February called “The Women & The Waves”. For those who don’t know, in addition to being a kickass yoga teacher, Heather Tiddens is also a kickass surfer. Check out this film to see her shred some crazy waves and discuss what it’s like to be a female surfing star. You can purchase the DVD online from the film’s website, and you can also buy a copy from Heather if you happen to see her in person.
4) We are particularly excited to report that Niav Connor is subbing Deb Dobbin’s classes at Yoga Soup all week long next week! (That’s Monday 4/27, Wednesday 4/29, and Saturday 5/2.) Read our previous post to see why this is so very cool.
5) Mark Whitwell was in town to host a workshop at Santa Barbara Yoga Center a couple of weekends ago, and he apparently told his students to stop meditating. Confused? Ask SBYC teacher Denise Zaverdas to expound.
6) If you happen to be at Santa Barbara Yoga Center around 5:00pm-ish within the next few days, you might notice a larger-than-normal crowd of people lingering about outside and one radiant, long-haired man who seems to be the center of their attention. This would be the students of the Erich Schiffmann teacher training, which ends at 4:45 each weekday and is running through April 26th. The radiant man who is the students’ focus is the famed Erich Schiffmann himself, and it’s a delight to have his presence in our yoga community for a sustained amount of time.
Conclusion: In conclusion, we had a significant amount of Santa Barbara yoga news to report today, wouldn’t you say?
