Cybil Gilbertson, whom some of you may know through her prestigious dancing career here in Santa Barbara, through her pilates instruction, or through her massage therapy practice, has just embarked on the path of yoga teaching! She now teaches a Yoga for Core Strength class at Santa Barbara Yoga Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00-1:30pm. Connecting to your core during yoga is crucial for a fully-integrated, healthy practice – so get on down to Cybil’s class and make your core sore (do you like our rhyme?) And we mean ‘sore’ in a good way, guys.
Iyengar Yoga Studio of Santa Barbara, that awesome new yoga studio on De La Vina St. run by Richard McLaughlin & Emma-Jane Huerta, is hosting an Intro to Yoga course beginning May 24. Deets: Every Saturday from 3:30-4:30pm for 4 Saturdays (May 24-June 14), PLUS a free Level 1 class after the completion of the intro. This whole package is $50, which is honestly a great deal, especially for the high-quality yoga instruction offered at IYSSB. If you know someone who might be interested in starting yoga or reviewing the fundamentals, send them IYSSB’s way! (805/569-2684 or www.iyssb.com)
Niav Connor’s early-morning flow class at Yoga Soup has slightly shifted its time slot from 6:45am-8:15am to 7:00am-8:30am. Small shift minutes-wise, but big shift mental-wise – going to a 7:00am class sounds much more do-able than making it to a class anytime in the 6′s. Don’t you think?
What is going to happen with the addition of Yoga Soup’s second studio? This is the burning question on all of our minds. We had a chance to stop by the studio today and chat with Karen Gabai, the esteemed manager of this popular yoga studio, and she let us in on a few secrets. There will definitely be yoga happening in the new space, as well as the fun dance/yoga fusion class NIA. There also may be Tai Chi classes held in the second studio, and possibly one or two other more eclectic types of classes. The addition of the new practice space might bring Mysore-style Ashtanga to Yoga Soup, most likely in the form of instructors who are currently teaching in Santa Barbara. Special events will also probably start taking place in the new room as opposed to the current main studio space.
Yoga Soup hopes to have their new studio up and running on June 1st. They know it’s a lofty ambition, considering the significant build-out they’re doing on the space, but at least they have a stated goal.
Here are two pictures that we took of the new space today. It will be fun to compare them with the finished product in June!

I am a yoga teacher in Hawaii and I am coming to Santa Barbara at the end of Feb. and I am looking to connect with yoga here and also teach at studios if the opportunity exists. Feel free to contact me and look at my website if this interests you.
