SBYC Receives a Major Makeover

Monday, 4 February, 2008

If you haven’t been by the Santa Barbara Yoga Center lately, you’ve missed out on a major makeover that’s taken place there. Do you remember the old-school SBYC? The one in which you would enter through the double doors in the middle of the building and find yourself in a tiny front office with a cramped sign-in desk, two small, always-occupied benches, and a large shoe rack which took up over half of the hallway in which it sat?

Well, times they have a-changed, and the newly-transformed SBYC feels in many ways like a brand new space. Instead of entering through the doors in the middle of the building, students now walk through the doors in the front of the building. (What a concept!)

What they find is a spacious room with an expansive round sign-in desk that looks like this:

Notice the pretty fresh flowers on the desk? And the spacious empty floor area before the desk that feels like the opposite of claustrophobic? There are also a couple of benches in here that you can’t see in this picture and a loft that overlooks this area that’s intended as communal space which will soon feature hot water for tea.

What was formerly the cramped front office of SBYC now looks like this:

The original sign-in desk and the sizeable shoe rack are gone, and what’s left is a very pleasant antechamber for the large “Studio 1″. It’s hard to believe that this walk-in-closet-sized space served as the entire front office of this establishment for years!

The other major change to SBYC is the addition of a third studio. This room is referred to as the “loft studio” as it’s located in the back of the building and one must ascent a flight of stairs to reach it. It’s bright and lovely and it looks like this:

All-in-all, these changes took a significant amount of time and energy, and we think the result is a more open space that flows nicely and undoubtedly makes much more sense than the previous layout. Great job, SBYC!
