Back in May, we reported on our blog that Nicole Muhlethaler, who worked for Drishti for four years, had moved to Kenya for two years via the Peace Corps. We promised you an update on this exciting African adventure, and we’re here to deliver! We’re happy to report that Nicole is quite content with her experience in Kenya, although it has certainly not been without its challenges. She is living in a sizeable two-bedroom house with running water, full electricity, and beautiful views outside each window! She is located in a mountain town north of Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, and close to famous Mt. Kenya.
She works at a district hospital and her projects focus on health education. Examples of her work include interviewing a group of rural field workers and using their answers to help create a community action plan to provide them with shoes, masks, latrines, etc.; giving a condom demonstration to a group of youths to help raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention; learning to write grant letters to help bring money and resources to those in need.
In addition to her work, Nicole has learned a considerable amount about Kenyan culture (including the main Kenyan language of Swahili), and she has made a great amount of friends, both in her fellow Peace Corps Volunteers and in the local Kenyans that she meets.
Although we miss Nicole tremendously, we are incredibly proud of her for choosing this path. We hope you enjoyed this report on our long-lost Drishti employee!
