Yoga just can’t seem to get enough attention from the press lately! Here’s a list of some recent news articles featuring the topic of yoga which you might have missed. Some of them are *pretty* entertaining, we must say!
1) Today’s New York Times features a lengthy article entitled “Striking a Pose for Girth”, which covers several yoga classes throughout the country designed specifically for people who are overweight. The class names range from HeavyWeight Yoga to Yoga for Round Bodies to (our personal favorite) Buddha Body Yoga. We were intrigued by the fact that Michael Hayes, the owner of Buddha Body Yoga, claims that his classes are not designed for people of all shapes and sizes – they are “only for big people… I’m not interested in teaching small people. There are so many other classes for them.” This NYT article raises some compelling arguments we hadn’t thought about before, like whether it’s better for large people to sequester themselves off in isolated classes like these ones, or whether it would be more beneficial for them to intermingle into general yoga classes. There’s a reason that “Striking a Pose for Girth” is today’s #4 most emailed article on the NYT website: it’s thoughtful and well-done and we think you should check it out!
2) Speaking of yoga designed for a specific population, did you see this article on Naked Yoga in Austin, Texas? Wowza.
3) And if Buddha Body Yoga and Naked Yoga weren’t enough for you, how about the fact that after all of the coverage it’s already received, people still can’t seem to resist writing articles about doga (yoga classes for dog owners and their pets)? Here’s an article from TwinCities.com that doesn’t provide too much more information on doga than what’s already been reported in the NYT and on CNN, but it features some highly entertaining photos which are definitely worth perusing. This photographer has quite the eye for creative camera angles and high-quality images.
4) On Monday, Reuters ran an article about yoga retreats and the economy, the first line of which cleverly read, “When the going gets tough, the tough get centered, preferably in paradise.” According to the article, the stress of the economy is pushing more people toward healing and wellness, and therefore toward yoga retreats. But this is definitely not always the case from what we’ve been hearing through our own yoga community connections: we know of several yoga retreats and workshops which have been struggling in the attendance department. Sometimes we think that journalists simply decide to have a chat with one or two people and then use those minimal interviews to make sweeping blanket statements about an entire industry. Well, maybe a little bit more than sometimes.
5) And in case you missed it, we published the official Drishti review of the new yoga movie Enlighten Up! last week. We’re kind of proud of our little review, and we think you might find our commentary quite interesting, whether you’ve had the chance to see the film or not.
