As the practice of yoga has become increasingly popular over the past few years, a new trend has emerged that we’d like to call “Questionably Calling Something Yoga”. In fact, we notice this phenomenon on such a regular basis that we’ve decided to launch a new column on The Drishti Blog which will follow it. Welcome to the inaugural post of this new series!
Which activity is being questionably called yoga today? Well, it’s something called anti-gravity yoga and it looks like this:
From the news article describing anti-gravity yoga:
Some are calling it the “yoga of the future,” and many of America’s big cities have embraced it. Now, anti-gravity yoga is starting to gain traction in other parts of the country, including here in Orlando.
A widely-accepted definition of yoga in the West today goes something like: “A practice with roots in India which combines bodily movements (asanas) with breath (pranayama) to facilitate a meditative state (samadhi). Generally performed on a yoga sticky mat on a hard-surfaced floor.” Based on this definition, we are officially giving anti-gravity yoga the “questionably calling something yoga” stamp.
