Questionably Calling Something Yoga – vol. 1

Sunday, 31 May, 2009

As the practice of yoga has become increasingly popular over the past few years, a new trend has emerged that we’d like to call “Questionably Calling Something Yoga”.  In fact, we notice this phenomenon on such a regular basis that we’ve decided to launch a new column on The Drishti Blog which will follow it.  Welcome to the inaugural post of this new series! :)

Which activity is being questionably called yoga today?  Well, it’s something called anti-gravity yoga and it looks like this:

From the news article describing anti-gravity yoga:

Some are calling it the “yoga of the future,” and many of America’s big cities have embraced it. Now, anti-gravity yoga is starting to gain traction in other parts of the country, including here in Orlando.

A widely-accepted definition of yoga in the West today goes something like: “A practice with roots in India which combines bodily movements (asanas) with breath (pranayama) to facilitate a meditative state (samadhi). Generally performed on a yoga sticky mat on a hard-surfaced floor.”  Based on this definition, we are officially giving anti-gravity yoga the “questionably calling something yoga” stamp.  If you have an opinion about our assessment (positive or negative), feel free to let us know in the comments section. :)
