Rumi, 800 Years Later

Friday, 9 November, 2007

RumiIt’s officially been 800 years since the birth of the famous Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi in the geographical area now known as Afghanistan. The yoga community is acutely familiar with Rumi’s prolific poetry and wisdom. If you’re not reading The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks before you go to bed each night, you’re listening to his poems through the medium of your yoga instructor, who recites them as you drift off into savasana-induced bliss at the end of yoga practice every day. To mark the significance of this 800 year anniversary of sorts, Tom Ashbrook, host of NPR’s “On Point”, ran a thoughtful hour-long show on the famed spiritual figure. Featuring interviews with Coleman Barks, James Morris, and Fatemeh Kashavarz, this radio show is definitely worth a listen. Click here to check it out.
