MC Yogi is the newest artist to hit today’s yoga music scene, and he has done so with quite a splash! MC Yogi takes the traditional yoga music of kirtan (the repetitive singing of ancient Sanskrit chants, often done in a call-and-response format) and combines it with well-done, honest-to-goodness hip-hop, resulting in a new genre which gives the old-school tunes some new-school, urban-style updates. If you’ve taken any yoga class over the past five years in which the teacher plays music, you have most definitely heard kirtan. Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, and Bhagavan Das are the most well-known performers of this genre (there are many others as well, but these three are kind of the “kings of kirtan” in our opinion), and all three of them just happen to be featured on MC Yogi’s debut album, “Elephant Power”. The inclusion of these three kirtan greats, as well as Jivamukti’s Sharon Gannon, lends extra credibility and cache to the album.
We purchased Elephant Power on iTunes and have been playing it in our store lately, much to the delight of our customers and employees. We think that the chances that you will enjoy MC Yogi’s musical offerings are very high. You can check out MC Yogi and find links for downloading his music here. (In addition to the super fun album Elephant Power which we know you’ll love, be sure to check out the free download of MC Yogi’s song “Vote For Hope”, which is a musical tribute to Barack Obama.)
Enjoy, Guys!
P.S. We would love to see Yoga Soup, one of our local yoga studios in town, book MC Yogi for a live performance here in Santa Barbara. We would attend this fine event for sure.

Just bought this CD and I love the energy! track 5 is something else, i want to hear more
So glad to hear that you’re enjoying this album! Track 5 is definitely beautiful. It would be great if it were longer, though. (It’s only like 30 seconds long.) We have also been loving tracks 3, 6, and 9.
