“Bonding With Their Downward-Facing Humans” is the title of an article which appears in today’s New York Times.  Apparently “doga”, the new term for practicing yoga with your canine, is a bona-fide trend and is taking place in regularly-held classes in Chicago, New York City, and Seattle.  Doga classes consist of a combination of massage, gentle stretching, and meditation designed for dog owners and their pets to practice together.  To most mainstream yogis, the thought of doga may seem silly and even strange, and we agree.  But the practice isn’t causing any harm.  And if anything, the dog owners leave feeling more connected to their pets, and Rover might have received a nice stretch or two that he otherwise wouldn’t have, so what’s the big dealio?

A pro-doga argument quoted in the article:

Because dogs are pack animals, they are a natural match for yoga’s emphasis on union and connection with other beings.

An anti-doga argument quoted in the article:

“Doga runs the risk of trivializing yoga by turning a 2,500-year-old practice into a fad,” said Julie Lawrence, 60, a yoga instructor and studio owner in Portland, Ore. “To live in harmony with all beings, including dogs, is a truly yogic principle. But yoga class may not be the most appropriate way to express this.”

And a couple of the best pictures which will probably cause you to utter the same perplexed expression that we chose to title this post with :) :
