It is important when you live an active lifestyle to make sure that you are getting adequate nutrition.  It can be hard, though, to know what kind of foods you should be eating.  With dietary trends changing day to day, proper nutrition gets more and more confusing.  From raw to superfood to paleo to gluten-free, it becomes difficult to keep your kitchen stocked with the staples of each!  In order to keep things simple, we have compiled a list of super-powerful ingredients that will give you a boost of energy and help keep you going through the day. Finally, a list of surprising powerful ingredients that does not include kale!

1. Amaranth

Amaranth is a grain that was used by Aztecs and comprised the majority of their caloric intake.

Why do we love it?  Amaranth is chock-full of protein: amaranth has a higher protein content than almost every other grain, and will keep you feeling full all day.

Amaranth is gluten-free:  For those of you trying to avoid of minimize gluten intake, amaranth is a perfect substitute.

Amaranth improves heart-health:  Amaranth is known to lower cholesterol, which is naturally good for your heart!

How to eat it:  Our favorite super-simple preparation for amaranth is to boil it in the morning for about 20 minutes (water to amaranth ratio = 2:1), add some chopped walnuts, bananas, and maple syrup.  Delicious!

2. Kefir

Kefir is a fermented milk drink, much like yogurt but with a less thick consistency.

Why we love it:  Kefir is good for your digestive system: Kefir is a treasure trove of probiotics, which help maintain gut health.

Low lactose: The beneficial yeast and bacteria in Kefir provide natural lactase, the enzyme that counteracts more of the lactose, leaving this drink almost lactose-free and making it ideal for people with dairy intolerance.

How to eat it:  Kefir comes in many flavors and can be ingested as a drink, or poured over cereal instead of milk.  (For extra power, add to your morning amaranth!)

3. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are an amazing powerhouse of vitamins and minerals

Why we love them:  Immune support:  Pumpkin seeds are known as a rich source of zinc, which helps immune function.

Protein-rich:  One cup of pumpkin seeds contains 11.87 grams of protein.  Keep them around to snack on throughout your day and you will feel energized from morning to night!

How to eat them:  Pumpkin seeds are delicious roasted with just a bit of oil and salt or mixed into a green salad.

4. Blueberries

Small but potent, blueberries are our favorite and the most delicious power food.

Why we love them: Blueberries are low in calories but rich in fiber.  This means that they keep you full longer without added calories. Additionally, they contain manganese, which helps convert carbs into energy!

Daily dose of vitamin C: Blueberries are packed with vitamin C, which is an immeasurably important nutrient for many aspects of our overall health.

How to Eat them:  Try making this delicious blueberry cobbler, or eat them alone, or in your breakfast cereal.

We will be back soon with more tips on delicious power foods to power your day.  Until then, enjoy snacking on these and enjoy the energy that results!
